This extremely old variety makes a vigorous plant that bears enormous numbers of bright yellow, bite-sized fruit. The flavor is deliciously tangy. Perfect for hors d’oeuvres. Yellow pear tomato plants may bear small fruits, but the vines themselves are anything but compact. In fact, vines can reach as tall as 12 feet. For that reason, the heirloom fruits, which are technically in the cherry tomato class, need a support structure such as a wire cage. Like other tomatoes, yellow pears also need well-timed supplements of fertilizer to support tomato fruit production. Watch for the tell-tale golden-yellow color to emerge, which indicates perfect ripeness.
